Northern Neck of Virginia

The Northern Neck of Virginia is a unique place where history and natural beauty blend. There is a real need to keep this area from becoming one of the places from which you flee. If you visit, or if you move here, move among us respectfully.

As it has been said, take only photographs and leave only memories. Keep the noise of your watercraft and your friends hushed when you skim along the shores.

Keep your fascination with portable and amplified music confined to places where you need that just to keep your concentration. Remember that if you would not walk through someone's suburban property, you should not take for granted that shorelines belong to you. In Virginia, owners' properties go to the mean low water mark, which means if you can walk on it, someone else owns it.

Give respect to a place which has been here long before you were dreamed, and which will, God willing, be here long after your grandchildren are only memories.

The Northern Neck of Virginia will, of course, accept you as a visitor, in the old Southern tradition of hospitality. Your conduct will determine if you are a welcomed return guest.

It is not a question of whether or not this still-remote peninsula deserves your attention -- it is a question of whether or not it will survive it and remain what its communities treasure today -- and what sparked your interest. Tread softly. Thanks, in advance.
