WHAT QUESTIONS SHOULD I ASK A LAWYER?

There are obviously questions you will have for an attorney about the situation which caused you to seek legal help. Beyond the questions you have about the specific area in which you need legal assistance, there are certain basic questions which you should consider asking.

What percentage of the lawyer’s practice is devoted to the type of case you have?

Does the lawyer regularly practice law before the Court in which your case will be heard?

How long has the lawyer been active in the practice of law in this jurisdiction?

What type of updated legal research resources does the lawyer have available to her (or him) within her (or his) own office?

Does the lawyer charge a fee for consultation, and if so, what is it?

Does the lawyer meet with you personally for the entire consultation, or do you spend most of your appointment time with an associate or with a staff person?

Does the lawyer accept credit cards as a method of payment?

Does the lawyer have e-mail as an available means of communication between you and her (or him)?

Will the lawyer make efforts to meet you for appointments at a time which will not conflict with your hours of work?

Beyond these basic factual inquiries, you should feel free to assess whether or not you are comfortable going into Court with the attorney you are considering hiring. Your questions are all important questions. If the lawyer you ask doesn’t have time for answers at the beginning, that lawyer may not have time for answers later at a time which may be critical to you.
