Darkness fell quickly on Halloween night --

the ghouls of the evening readied their flight --

the moon was in hiding, behind a dark cloud --

voices whispering, none spoke aloud!

Children, silly ones, thought it a game --

the ones who were older scarce spoke the name.

"Halloweeeeeeeeeeeeeen! "cried the owl too high up to see!

"Halloweeeeeeeeeennnn! " echoed off gravestones and trees!

Slowly the mists and the cotton-thick fog

they come back to see what's going on here.

You can fight them all night if you so choose

but it's a war you cannot help but lose --

your weapons can't aim at the place where they are --

it's like sending cannon shot off to a star!

They'll think you quite foolish and spin you around,

enjoying your fear as they fly up and down.

Better just stay quiet, and out of their way

until morning's light makes waste of their day.

Sleep well! Stay safe! And have pleasant dreams,

and until dawn breaks its spell, have a
